Letter to the Editor: Train bosses must keep promise to paint Wimbledon Chase bridge

By Ian Smith, Merton Park

As part of the general regeneration of the area, Network Rail promised in 2009 to paint the railway bridge at Wimbledon Chase and to tackle the squalid litter situation at the foot of the bridge.

They reneged on their promises, pleading shortage of money.

They still managed to pay their outgoing chairman, Iain Coucher, 1.5 million pounds.

Recently, in the face of public outrage, six directors of National Rail have been shamed into waiving their part of a £20m bonus pot.

Today, in 2012, the bridge remains a decaying eyesore and the litter situation gets ever more squalid.

Twenty million pounds would paint a lot of bridges. Why don't they paint ours?

The bridge is very definitely in a bad way, but it hasn't been "graffiti-blighted" since November, as Network Rail were finally convinced to paint out the graffiti (after at least 2 years' lobbying) - as your picture shows. Still it shows that public pressure can work.
