How does my garden grow
9:41am Wednesday 16th May 2012 in Streatham
From small beginnings come great things
Children at Lambeth Day Nursery have been making the most of the break in the rain to get down and dirty in their growing area this week.
Green fingers at the ready the children have been experimenting with a variety of vegetables, including beetroot, leeks and carrots, and asking the question ‘how does my garden grow’?
The whole idea behind the growing area is for the children to see for themselves the journey of food, from planting the first seed, through to harvesting and preparing a meal. “The children really enjoy getting out in our growing area planting seeds and watering the vegetables” says Michelle O’Conner, Manager at Lambeth Day Nursery “We try to plant a mixture of different vegetables to make it more exciting for the children to help educate them on the benefits of a healthy, balanced diet. They love picking and adding their own nursery grown lettuce to their sandwiches!”
Parents of the children are also really behind the activity. “The children are doing a brilliant job growing veg and fruit in their growing area“” says Sharon Niles, Mother of Rachel “it is important for them to understand the process used in growing and see the end results! ”
Here's hoping the children reap a bumper crop this year.
