L’ARCHE LAMBETH ARTIST MEETS THE MAYOR

Derek meets the Mayor of Lambeth Derek meets the Mayor of Lambeth

L’Arche Lambeth and Brockwell Art Gallery are staging an art exhibition, and the Mayor of Lambeth, Cllr Christiana Valcarcel, was one of the first visitors.

L’Arche is a community of people with and without learning disabilities. Some live together in shared houses, whilst others live independently but meet for meals, community activities and general fun.

The Mayor especially liked Derek’s work. Derek has been a member of L’Arche for 25 years and lives with three other people with learning disabilities. His style is very distinctive and striking. He’s pictured here in front of one of his largest abstract works, although he also has produced a series of drawings based on an aeroplane motif, and a portrait in mixed media. Works by other L’Arche members are also featured, from photography to fine art to abstract pieces.

The exhibition continues throughout February at 232– 234 Railton Road, Herne Hill, SE24 0JT. All works are for sale, with the proceeds split between the artist and L’Arche Lambeth, a registered charity.

Based on information supplied by Kathleen Boyle. Director of L'Arche Lambeth.
