Opticians’ help to get London reading

THE word was definitely on the street this week as a local optician’s continued its support of Volunteer Reading Help (VRH).

Mark Worthington, store manager at Specsavers in Banstead High Street, visited the town’s library to donate books and help raise awareness of VRH.

Mark says: ‘Given the clear link between eye health and reading, our store is very excited about our continued support of VRH and the important work the charity does.

‘We will be hosting several fundraising events in the coming months, and the store is looking forward to the community’s support with helping to raise awareness of the importance of children’s ability to read.’ Karen Swan, manager of the library in the town, says: ‘This is a fantastic campaign that Specsavers are supporting. We know the importance of reading and have recently had many improvements made. Children can join the library for free and can check out up to nine books at a time. We have also had special self check-out screens created for the children to make every part of their visit fun.’ Specsavers stores in the greater London region have collectively pledged to raise more than £25,000 by the beginning of the 2012 school year for VRH, a charity which trains volunteers to provide one-on-one reading support for struggling pupils at London's most deprived primary schools.
