Station Quotations

8:34am Friday 8th March 2013

Living behind the station and having to see these captions so often, I am in complete agreement with the 'verbal brickbats of lame, hideous and embarrassing' that have been used to describe the captions that are now part of the station development. However I must add that the 'lame, hideous and embarrassing' quotes do match the 'lame, hideous and embarrassing' development that we now have to suffer. When will people learn you just don't trust a councillor, they have no interest in you or your well being.

Homeless Housing for 16-25 year olds 87 East St

10:47am Wednesday 6th March 2013

Sanctuary Housing are seeking planning permission for a large development of 45 beds its which would house "young homeless people from the Epsom and Ewell area." These young people will be given tenancies for one or two years and require 24hour supervision, CCTV monitoring of the premises and severe restrictions imposed on the tenancy agreements they sign. It is likely, since they will be young people who have had alcohol or drug problems in the past, that the home will have rules restricting alcohol in the premises and potentially random drug testing of the residents. The development is not a halfway house or an open prison, nor is it a residential development for independent living accessible for all seeking housing. My concern is that whilst control may be exercised within the confines of the development, it will not be possible to control the behaviour of 45 individuals- who- like all teenagers are easily influenced once they are away from their bedsits. I represent Laine Theatre Arts which is a major employer in Epsom, bringing a significant number of young 16 - 25 year old students into the town as well as providing classes for adults and young children who live locally. I think it is fair to say that we know about the behaviour of young people and how they behave in groups and yet Neither Sanctuary nor the Council felt it necessary to consult with us concerning the location or size of this development. Our studios are on East St and our students are dancers and musical theatre performers who are conspicuous and are frequently targeted by the less desirable elements of Epsom. Creating a significant gang of youths who will, because they live together, tend to socialize together, learn from each other and move around the town together will be a serious threat to the young people we teach and educate. And yet this is exactly what the Council and Sanctuary wish to do. It stands to reason that putting individuals with similar problems and similar proclivities will not, as is hoped, reduce the chances of recidivism but in fact increase them. The reason, therefore, for the creation of this development is financial. The Council save money because the cost of looking after young vulnerable individuals is handed over to a company who, by putting all the council's problem cases together, can create economies of scale which increase this private company's profit.

Consultation on 87 East Street is a disgrace

8:48am Wednesday 6th March 2013

On 14 March, the Borough's Planning Committee will make a decision on whether to grant planning permission for a facility for 45 troubled youngsters. This is a development in which local residents in a predominantly residential area outside the centre of Epsom were obviously going have a major interest.
