Mitochondria - Where did they come from?

by James Street All living animals, humans included, are inhabited consistently by other organisms. This is a fact that, although not many may want to linger on, is somewhat understandable and unsurprising. However, perhaps a more surprising factoid is that mitochondria of our very cells are believed to have arised from endocytic bacteria which developed an advanced relationship with our cells early in evolution.
The End of the Recession?

Terry Saga Rumbles On

To even those with no interest in football, the John Terry saga will not have escaped anybody’s attention over the last fortnight. The (former) England captain is no stranger to negative tabloid press, but the recent scandal has cost him both his job and a respect among football fans. Many were shocked, not by the defender’s actual act, but his attempt to be granted a super injunction to prevent the story from ever being reported. Pundits and journalists seem are split as to what should have happened to Terry. All have their opinions on what this has done to England’s World Cup chances, which player should be captain and what will happen when Terry and Wayne Bridge inevitably play together again. In my opinion though, I believe Terry should have retained the England captaincy and in addition, I think in South Africa the Chelsea player will b wearing the captain’s armband. I am not trying to defend what Terry did; far from it; but the captain should be picked on purely football reasons and promoting Rio Ferdinand to captain and Steven Gerrard to vice-captain appears hypocritical. Both players have hardly been model professionals, with Ferdinand currently on a four-match ban for serious foul play and previously suffering from an eight-month ban for skipping a random drugs test. In addition, just last year Gerrard was arrested for and later cleared from GBH charges after assaulting a member of the public at a night club for allegedly not playing Phil Collins.

Jigsaw4u launches new Sutton service for Young Runaways

By Community Correspondent Jackie Mitchell Children’s charity Jigsaw4u (www.jigsaw4u.org.uk) is expanding its successful service for Young Runaways to Sutton, thanks to new three year funding from the Big Lottery, Lloyds TSB and the Safer Sutton Partnership.
Local Guides celebrated World Thinking Day at One World One Beat event

From Community Correspondent Steve Wicks: Guides and their Leaders from Cheam, Worcester Park and Old Malden, marked Girlguiding UK’s Centenary World Thinking Day with a high-energy performing arts festival called One World One Beat. Across the UK, nine One World One Beat events were staged so thousands of girls and young women could celebrate the occasion.
London living room turns pink

From Community Correspondent Steve Wicks: The London Living Room was a splash of pink recently when the Chair of the London Assembly, Darren Johnson invited representatives of Guiding to a reception to celebrate their centenary. Members from all boroughs of Greater London together with the Region Chief Commissioner of London and the South East England, Anne Hudson and Chief Guide’s representative, Lesley Knighton enjoyed the hospitality, the views over London and meeting and talking to members of the Assembly.
Valentine’s Day? No, thanks. I rather make a big deal about Pancake Day.
