This afternoon, the Maths Feast challenged many young minds in the local area. This maths feast occurred at Feltham community college and was sponsored by the Further Mathematics Support Programme. The programme runs competitions to stretch the mathematical abilities and teamwork skills of many year tens across the entire country of England. Within each event, local schools

The afternoon is set up as a literal feast, including set menu of hors d’ouevres, entrees, mains and even a dessert. The different rounds explored sets, origami, and problem solving. The teams of four representing different teams had to work together to solve many challenging problems. There even was a short break for the participants to enjoy an array of treats including party rings.

At the end of the afternoon, the participants received certificates for their achievements, not only for the winners of each individual “course” or activity, but also the team which works best as a team together. Everyone involved receives a certificate of participation at the conclusion of the afternoon. In the local competition at Feltham Community College, teams included Feltham Community College, Orleans Park School, and many more.

The Further Matchematics Support Programme launched this idea to get year tens excited about maths and possibly continue them on to A-Levels and even further in their educational careers. The event is designed to be centalised on the mathematics, but incorporating fun. The event also includes volunteers from higher education, who can give you an insight into the difficulties, but also advantages of continuing with maths into higher education.
