Burlington Infant School, New Malden, has been raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness every October for the past eight years! This year the school raised awareness by engaging the children with cross-curriculum activities throughout the week.

Various subjects were used to produce cupcakes that were sold on the Thursday (23rd). Using their literary skills, the students wrote instructions to make the cupcakes. Maths provided the measuring of ingredients and estimating/counting of the money raised. In ICT, they designed the toppings and advertisement for the cakes, in addition to creating posters to raise awareness of the Breast Cancer charity; the cakes made, were then sold on Thursday to parents and pupils.

PHSE gave students in Year 1 and 2, the opportunity to discuss illnesses, touching upon cancer and how it affects those closest to them. A few staff members commented on how openly the children talked about the issues raised, plus the number of relatives and family friends to have been diagnosed with cancer. Most were able to share their experiences and confer emotions felt.

There was even an assembly, for Year 1 and 2, on Wednesday to address the purpose of wearing pink and raising money for the charity. Pretty in pink, the whole school (from Nursery to Year 2) celebrated Wear It Pink! Day on Thursday. On average, the school makes £450 each year – there are always last minute donations though.

After being taken to the bank, the school receive a certificate for their donation, which is then proudly displayed on their Charity Wall in Burlington Infants’ assembly hall, giving pride to the pupils for having this recognition of their hard work.
