By community correspondent Catherine Rowland The latest concern to hit members of the Streatham community is the plan to shut down the ice rink: a place that has been the venue for many social occasions such as birthday parties, discos and school trips for over 75 years. Now with plans threatening to take away the place that has been at the heart of the Streatham community whilst everything around it has undergone change, we must remember the positive role the ice rink has played for a great many years, and consider what each one of us can do to stop it from being closed down. Petitions are currently being advertised and signed locally in order to stop plans going ahead to demolish and get rid of the ice rink we all know and love. Each one of us can make a difference to save the ice rink by petitioning and protesting against these plans. The ice rink, which has become infamous amongst nearly every community member, is an asset to our community: it provides both a great social hub as well as a fun way of getting fit with friends.

With the London 2012 Olympics looming over the horizon, one would think that at this stage, we should be building even more sports venues across London constituencies to encourage talented young people and grow them into Olympic stars. Therefore, it is up to us to inform our MPs on our views regarding this matter, persuading them not to go ahead with the plans. Should they go ahead, Streatham will lose a significant part of its great history and possibly an even greater part of its future.
