We’d like to know a bit more

Reading your article about the 21-year career of fireman Phil Goedluck (All in a Day’s Work, November 6), I couldn’t help but make comparisons to the film Cool Runnings and the people out there who have achieved so much.

What a great guy. To have competed for our country as a runner, then a bobsleigher before turning his hand to a vital emergency service is just so admirable – fantastic.

And it got me thinking about all the other people out there – the police, ambulance officers and civil servants – who do such a good job and must have many a tale to tell.

I’d be keen to hear more about the lives and times of those on the front line.

These are people who witness such harrowing sites and risk their own safety for others – as Phil did.

And yet, they are also people that are often abused by members of the public.

Maybe knowing a bit more about them would earn them the respect of the public which they so clearly already deserve.
