Liberal Democrat leader Colin Strong joins the local Conservatives in announcing the demise of the Labour Party.
A chill northerly wind from the Glenrothes byelection corrects him. The vote of the Labour victor actually rose by 600 on the 2005 General Election figure.
The Conservative candidate lost 1,300 votes there, while the Liberal Democrat plunged from 4,728 in 2005 to just 947 in 2008. Both lost their deposits.
Mr Strong should devote his energies to opposing the brutal cuts in public services with Tory councillors in Spelthorne are inflicting.
Perhaps he could name even one success achieved by his ineffective Liberal Democrat opposition group.
As for the Tories, in vain do they seek to divert attention from the catastrophic loss of their share of the vote in the Ashford East byelection.
While Labour’s rose, the Conservative share fell from 68 per cent to 51 per cent. Such a decline in the General Election would see the return of a Labour MP.
