I regularly use the Weir Road recycling facility when I have a car load of garden waste, cardboard, plastic packaging, wood, clothing etc.
Hardly anyone uses it although there are often several helpful young men who always unload the car for me, empty my bags and return them for reuse. It is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
You may say that it saves energy to allow the council to collect these things but Weir Road recycles many additional things which would normally go to landfill but can easily be collected by the householder.
Since Weir Road opened, I only put out a carrier bag of waste a week.
The catch is that one cannot throw anything away there.
Everything must be recycled but this is often quite easy when one looks at the range of containers - one for large plastic items such as broken garden furniture, tricycles, plastic crates etc and a separate one of plastic mixed with cardboard such as toothbrush packaging etc. Laminated glass and small items of useable furniture can be disposed of here.
It would be worth your while to make an unsolicited visit to this spotlessly clean site and publicise it. I spoke about its lack of use to one of the men, who said it was probably being privatised in the autumn.
Many people are happy to collect all the items it recycles until they have a load. The men are always most courteous.
It is the opposite of Garth Road.
