I am not surprised so many contributors to your on-line edition have made sceptical comments about Surrey County Council's ability to provide a "win, win, win" for the town centre following the £3m award for improvements.

Let us not forget this is the council that spent a significant amount of taxpayers’ money installing, over a period of at least 12 months, three different sets of pedestrian lights at Epsom station which have turned out to be totally ineffective, being ignored by most pedestrians. In London a simple zebra crossing would undoubtedly have been installed in what is a relatively quiet street with slow moving traffic.

Instead of the "win, win, win" why not spend a fraction of the money in synchronising the pedestrian and traffic lights in the town centre to produce better traffic flow and lower the pollution levels caused by idling vehicles?

Epsom is the home of Atkins one of the largest and most successful engineering consultancies in the world. I would hope it is not beyond their capabilities to design and implement a one-way system that works better than the existing one for a lot less than £3m.

This would save us the massive disruption that will be caused from the roadworks and enable most of the money to be spent on some of the improvements the town centre really needs. Your contributors have listed many!

If Atkins want input on which parts of the existing system need attention they only need to ask a few of the taxi drivers and members of the public any day of the week.
