I was saddened to hear about the death of the former Merton councillor Jan Jones (An enormous contribution to the borough, October 30).
Whilst on Merton Council from 1994-2002, I served with Jan on the then social services committee.
A formidable character and personality, she always made it clear where she stood and what she thought and was never afraid to ruffle feathers.
Yet she was passionate about Merton’s social services and a great advocate for her political cause.
Despite our differing beliefs, she and I always managed to get along personally; and we did share common ground in opposing the closures of Wimbledon Park and Morden Park libraries.
I extend my sympathies to Allan and Jan’s family.
