With child poverty on the increase in Sutton and children’s centres in the borough seeing massive cuts to their budgets, it is clear the Coalition Government is failing.
We are told austerity is in the national interest; tell that to the 13m people in the UK living below the poverty line.
The increasing use of food banks in Sutton – driven in part by the bedroom tax, low wages and rising energy and food prices – is yet another indictment of Conservative and Liberal Democrat policy.
While Sutton Foodbank volunteers show us the spirit of community, those elected to represent us choose a heartless, austerity drive that makes the poor poorer.
A radical alternative is needed. The Citizen’s Income would transform our society. An unconditional income for every individual as a right of citizenship, the Citizens’ Income would eliminate the unemployment and poverty traps, and act as a safety net to enable people to choose their own patterns of work. It would enable the welfare state to develop towards a welfare community, engaging people in socially useful work.
It is the failure of successive Governments that mean children in the UK still go to bed hungry.
