Another crash in Banstead Road and another well-meant but misdirected suggestion to put speed humps in the road when the cause of the crashes isn't the road but the people using it.
From more than 30 years of daily driving up and down Banstead Road it is clear that humps don't stop aggressive tail-gating, suicidal overtaking and blatant flouting of warning signs and speed limits. Humps on curves and adverse camber are liable to cause not prevent crashes.
These crashes will only stop when dangerous drivers realise they will end up in court and maybe jail and that will only happen if the speed limit is reduced to 20 mph and speed cameras installed to catch them and impose seriously harsh penalties. Solid white lines would be an additional warning.
The double tragedy a few months ago doesn't seem to have taught any lessons and probably won't until someone is held to account. If two cars travelling in opposite directions collide it means that one or both drivers crossed the white line intended to keep them apart. Stopping such behaviour needs driver awareness not speed humps.
