In reply to Mr Cooper’s letter (Not personal, October 10), any type of accusation against either a person, or their personality, is personal.

One might imagine the reason for the conflict in the Middle East is because the Arabs and the Jews are simply two dogs fighting over a bone, but why?

The answers are (a) World War II and the Jewish holocaust; (b) Middle East Oil; (c) the UN and the Cold War.

Of these three strands, the third is important, because the atom bomb threat of Mad (mutually assured destruction), and not the UN, has ensured world peace.

In fact, because of Mad, the UN was not a world union of free nations all working for the benefit of mankind, rather it was the plaything of the three founding members – the US, the USSR and Red China, who were stalemated by Mad, but who then manipulated the world by waging the Cold War through influence.

Even though the Cold War is over, post-Red Russia, post-Red China and post-Cold War US are still stalemating each other in the UN.

To maintain the uneasy balance between the super powers, the UN compromises by giving with one hand and taking with the other.

It was reported that 70 per cent of the people in Gaza live on UN relief, so in effect the UN is tacitly supporting the militancy of Hamas, and if 70 per cent of the Palestinian Muslim Arabs have been on UN relief since 1948, then inevitably the UN has tacitly supported all of the other attacks upon civilians in Israel.

That the UN could do this is unbelievable, but under the influence of the super powers, it is paralysed and prevented from taking decisive action, so Arabs and Jews are condemned to a stalemate which will not bring peace.
