Readers will probably know that the Christmas Lights were switched on in Epsom on Thursday. I was interested to note however that all of Epsom and Ewell Borough Council's publicity made reference to the event this week as the "Christmas Light's Switch On", with a redundant apostrophe in the word "lights". An apostrophe is used to indicate possession or abbreviation. Neither is the case here, and even if it were, the positioning of the apostrophe indicates that, this year, apparently Epsom has just one Christmas light.

The Mayor's Christmas fun race event on Sunday further publicises a race in the Market Place intended for "all those fairy's and elf's out there".

I'm not normally pedantic about grammar and spelling and we are all human, but this is just embarrassing.

Is the Mayor unable to write grammatical English? Would he care to explain to the residents of the borough how such basic humiliating mistakes could be made both online and in poster/magazine advertising?

This illiteracy does not represent the residents of his borough.
