What with job losses, banks collapsing and Celebrity Big Brother back on TV, the nation’s mood is unsurprisingly low. Which is why, one imagines, the one glimmer of hope perceived by the world, that of the inauguration of Barack Obama, was given such phenomenal coverage. While I understand the need to cover this major event that will impact in some fashion upon all of us at some point, there were still some points which were hard to stomach.

As last of the Woolworths chains closed, after almost 100 years of trading in some cases, it was refreshing to hear over the weekend the thoughts of Sir Win Bischoff, chairman of the Citigroup. The executive came out and said that some bankers felt remorse over crippling the financial markets and ultimately leaving almost 300,000 unemployed. For months there has been an agenda to try and stop hard working people feel anger towards the banks and reckless city employees who are seen to have helped contribute to the current stark climate face by the whole population. I have no doubt the fact the Citi executive said his board will forego their massive bonuses this year, which has seen all manner of records broken for downturns in the housing market and FTSE losses, will be a comfort to those who will find themselves in the dole queue come Monday.

Much has been made of the booing of Ashley Cole during England's game against Kazakhstan. The subject seems to have divided opinion. Some say a footballer is allowed to make a mistake, as we all do, and to boo is not only mindless but damaging to the individual. Others claim they have paid their money and express their discontent if they want to.
