Brentford's own goal and gaffs

I was pleased to read the other day that Danny Baker is making a return to the world of 'own goals gaffs', bringing out a new compilation just in time for the Christmas rush.

Bloopers DVDs are going to flood the shops in the run-up to the festive season but I'm sure that the master of the genre's return will blow the efforts of pretenders, including professional Cockney Danny Dyer and professional Scouser Ricky Tomlinson, clean out of the water.

It is probably too late to include Saturday's own goal by Danny Foster against Leyton Orient in the latest Own Goals and Gaffs, but it would certainly be a worthy contender for the next one.

When I watch incidents like that live my mind often plays tricks on me. Maybe it's just down to my sympathetic nature, but my initial thought is almost always, 'Oh well, there was not much he could do about it.'

Watching the action from my second row seat at Brisbane Road, it seemed the cross was devilish, Foster was tight for space and he had Orient players breathing down his neck. You only have to watch the replay once to realise how wishful that thinking was. For half-an-hour things were going so well for the Bees. A goal up away to London rivals and playing some decent stuff, but then, for no apparent reason, the team fell apart.

Despite Nikki Bull's excellent penalty save, we relinquished the lead soon after and although we made a couple of chances in the second half, suddenly every time Orient attacked our defence looked as bankrupt as the Orient vice-chairman. We can't blame anyone for the defeat but ourselves, yet I cannot let the weekend's game slip away without a mention of Andy D'Urso - an epically terrible referee.

His constant whistling and continued failure to make simple calls correctly was driving the Brentford fans, team and staff mad – at one point I thought Terry Bullivant was going to run on and lamp him. You can imagine how the meeting went when D'Urso was told he wouldn't be required to ref Premiership games any more.

“Not good enough for the Premiership Andy. No problem, why not head down to League One and ruin matches for some less important people!”

Sadly though, we cannot pretend the defeat was down to the man in black. Things are starting to get a little worrying and the team need to get back on the straight and narrow as quickly as possible - getting James Wilson in at centre back would be a good first step.

Stockport are coming to Griffin Park on Saturday and, without wishing to be too dramatic, it is a game we really must win.
