Brentford have officially been promoted. How do I know? Because, after a couple of depressing years of heading straight to the League Two section of the BBC website for Bees news (always after a trip to the excellent sports section of rttimes.co.uk of course!) we have finally been shifted to the League One link.
It may seem like quibbling to outsiders, but to no longer be associated with dross such as Accrington Stanley and Chester City is a blessed relief.
Not only have we had our promotion confirmed but, due to the magic of alphabetical order, we sit top of the table. If only the season ended in June.
Unfortunately, there has not been much Brentford transfer news to read about on our website, the BBC’s or any other site for that matter, which is a source of frustration for speculation-hungry fans.
Boss Andy Scott understandably does not want to reveal his hand and, besides, this week he is enjoying a well-earned holiday.
I am sure he won’t be taking his eye off the ball but I am equally certain he won’t be taking his eye off the pina coladas either and, so, the chance of good news on the transfer front may be a few days away yet.
One rumour doing the rounds is that Brentford are planning a swoop for out of contract Dagenham & Redbridge trio Ben Strevens, Sam Saunders and Danny Foster.
They all looked decent players, particularly right winger Saunders, when the Daggers ripped us apart in that re-arranged fixture in the darkest depths of east London, and would be great additions to the squad.
While I am waiting for the new season to start, my latest plan for passing the time is to buy the Season To Remember DVD and revel in our recent success.
It should be worth a look, if for nothing else but the unintentional comedy these kind of reviews usually throw up.
The last time I bought a DVD of this kind was after Martin Allen’s first year in charge and it must be one of the strangest things committed to celluloid.
Allen is filmed sitting in his living room staring out the camera with his pet dog on his lap, like a football-mad Blofeld, dissecting each and every game of the 2004-05 season, no matter how dull or inconsequential the fixture.
It is hilarious and disturbing in equal measure, and I would be pleasantly surprised if Scott has tried to emulate his performance.
