On Thursday 26th April, a moped driver was killed after colliding with a car outside of Isleworth Library. Police were then called to the scene at twenty past one as well as an air ambulance which landed in Redlees park. Despite the emergency services' best efforts, the moped driver was pronounced dead at one minute to two.

The news of the crash came to the students of Gumley House Convent School as a great shock, especially considering the close proximity of the accident to the school's site. One student commented on the accident the day after saying:" returning to school after the crash, seeing the flowers left for the victim, really surprised me because you don't expect things like that to happen so close to you."

This led me to question the saftey of the roads surrounding our schools. As a student at Gumley myself, I do feel less safe now crossing the busy roads near my school, especailly at peak times when there is a large ammount of traffic. It also brings up the issue of not needing a licence to drive a moped: one can be 16 years old with a provisional licence to legally drive a moped in the UK. Does this law need to be changed? Is 16 too young to be on the roads or is there a greater issue with wreckless or dangerous driving in this country as a whole?
