On Saturday 25th of February I experienced a Duke of Edinburgh practice day. I believe that the D of E scheme is an incredibly rewarding and useful learning experience as it teaches you many skills you can then apply to everyday life.

First of all, the Duke of Edinburgh award requires four tasks. You have to learn a skill, volunteer, part take in a fitness activity and lastly but most important go on the expedition. The lessons in which you learn by completing these tasks I believe are very helpful. For example, from the expedition you learn team work and survival skills and from the volunteering you become more involved in your local area.

On Saturday Year 10 learnt about maps, tents, clothing and overall tips and tricks in surviving the long walk and camping. Amirah Khalid from 10Fe said ‘I think that this trip is going to be a really hard but it will help bring everyone together’. Year 10 feel that this expedition might be difficult but in the end it will be rewarding. The twelve hour walk and one night camping will leave us feeling exhausted yet accomplished.

I believe that the Duke of Edinburgh award allows students to become more involved in their community and helps them to learn something new.
