Since January 2001, Holocaust Memorial Day has been held as a national commemoration day to dedicate remembrance to the sufferers of the Holocaust under the rule of the Nazis. This year’s theme is: ‘how can life go on?’ The theme explores the idea that during times of suffering it is important that our voices are heard to act against actions of violence and prejudice. It is important now that we support those that are suffering all across the globe. We must accept refugees and hear their stories and voice them to our friends as there are millions fleeing at this very moment from their war-torn lives.

This year for Holocaust Memorial Day, Nonsuch High School for Girls were given an assembly about the atrocities of the Holocaust and the inspirational stories of the few survivors. This year the girls learnt about Elie Wiesel, a survivor of the Holocaust and winner of the Noble Peace Prize in 1986. His story is one of honour; even whilst being separated from his loved ones he continued to chase freedom and the story of his powerful character and motive moves people even today.

“Even in a modern society in the present day, persecution happens worldwide and often it seems as though people fail to recognise it. It is our duty as people to stand up against acts of racism and sexism and any prejudice behaviour. We are all made of love and compassion, that is human nature; all we need to do is strive to show it more,” says Mr Syed about the topic. As the world continues to progress we need to remember the stories of the lives that were lost and also make the world a place that thrives with happiness. We need to be friends who voice people’s stories during the difficult times and remember the bravery of those who survived and died in the Holocaust.
