What do you want to be when you’re older? It’s a common question that we’ve heard in our younger years. Some say they wanted to be an astronaut, a doctor and even a mermaid. But it seems that some of our aspirations quickly faded as we grew older.

On the 19th of January, Year 12 Gumley students had a curriculum extension day which consisted of mini sessions to broaden our knowledge and insight of different careers. People from organisations such as GSK, Sky and BBC supported the Careers day. A variety of careers ranging from nursing to movie and creative studies, gave the opportunity for students to plan for job success. Another session involved a student finance game run by the organisation Pearson. The point of the game was to have a balanced social and work life but also how to finance and learn differerent skills that could come in handy in the future.

Personally, I was drawn towards the nursing session as I felt like it was a career that I never really considered. However I was able to understand what the course had to offer. I was able to find out that nursing was a career that spends more time with the patient which is something I strive to look for in a job. To know that I will make a change to someone’s life daily in itself gives me pins and needles (in this case it’s a good thing). After that session it definitely made me reconsider and widen my options. The nurse that came, (who was an ex gumley student) shared information about getting the career, what daily life is like and the necessary requirements needed for the course as well as skills necessary.

A student described the day as “a guidance on how to not just focus on one path and to have an open mind to other options”. The day certainly gave an understanding into many courses and careers for the future.
