New Year means New Ways of Helping the Environment- Rachel Wright, Carshalton High School for Girls

The new year is bringing new changes to Sutton’s community waste collection. A new scheme will be launched in April to enable the local community to have their garden waste collected every two weeks. People can pay for a bin to have for 12 months so they can throw any garden waste they may have away.

What to put in your Garden waste bin?

The local Sutton government recommend:

•    Twigs
•    Leaves
•    Branches up to 22cm (8 inches)
•    Old plants and weeds
•    Wind falls (Fallen apples)
•    Hedge and grass trimmings

However, the local council do not recommend things like rubble, bricks, turf, soil, anything that won’t compost, garden waste sacks and other plastic sacks, animal bedding or waste, general garden tools, polyester plant containers and plant pots to go into the waste bins.

The bin will cost £61.50 for the year and it can hold up to 240 litres of waste at a time.

The aim of the new scheme is not only to help the environment but to create a cleaner and better Sutton.
