Britney jury fails to reach verdict

A jury trying Britney Spears for allegedly driving without a valid driver's licence has failed to reach a verdict in Los Angeles.

The 26-year-old singer was not in court as the jury foreman declared that they were deadlocked after eight hours of deliberations.

Judge James Steele thanked the jurors for their service and declared a mistrial at the Los Angeles Superior Court.

US prosecutors did not immediately indicate whether Spears would face a retrial.

Spears did not have a California driver's licence, but did carry one from Louisiana, where she has a home, the court heard.
