Christopher Nolan directs his films like a "master chess player", actor Tom Berenger has said.

The Big Chill and Platoon star Tom, 63, starred in Christopher's 2010 film Inception.

He said of the British writer-director: "He's very, very smart. He seems to be the kind of guy who is a master chess player."

Tom, now starring in TV miniseries Hatfields And McCoys, said: "He would always be stood next to the camera like the old guys used to.

"I like that instead of behind video screens all the time. He was obviously editing it in his head while he was shooting it too.

"I was pretty impressed that he could remember where he was at every single moment. The script people seemed to know where they were at every single minute, but they were always holding on by their fingernails."

:: Hatfields And McCoys can be seen Thursdays at 9pm on Channel 5.
