ANOTHER athletics club has backed the decision to move the Wycombe Sports Centre track to a secondary school.

Bucks Speed Demons backed the Wycombe District Council plan to move the track four miles to Sir William Ramsay School, Hazlemere.

The council wants to create space for a coach interchange to finance the rebuilding of the Handy Cross sports centre, which it owns (see link, bottom of story).

It comes after Dougie Sutherland, chairman of Wycombe Phoenix Harriers, this week backed the move.

Speed Demons coach Alan Hewson said: “We welcome the planned move of the track to Sir William Ramsey School as a way of ensuring continuity of key facilities for the talented athletes who live and study in the area.

“There are many issues still to be resolved but with goodwill and a little vision we hope to see a facility built which will be sustainable over time, accessible to all and of the top quality to meet the potential of all our young athletes.

“We believe more athletes can follow in the footsteps of Nicola Sanders and compete on a world and Olympic stage with distinction.

“The existing track at Handy Cross launched Nicola’s career and we know there are others who deserve the same opportunities and quality facilities to set them on their way in the highly competitive sporting world.

“But there are also many local schools which have been hugely influential in identifying and fostering new talent and this should be a massive resource to them also.”
