Matt Lucas scored a late try to give Old Wimbledonians victory over league newcomers Fordingbridge in a scrappy game on Saturday, writes Eddie Bell.

The Old Boys drew first blood after early pressure on the 22-yard line allowed Matt Jones to easily slot a penalty.

But, after a 30 minutes, a careless pass thrown wide to the right was intercepted by the visiting centre to run most of the length of the pitch and score a converted breakaway try.

The Old Boys bounced back quickly with Jones punishing a visiting infringement with another penalty.

Then came the best move of the match, from the home 22 through several pairs hands until skipper David Robertson scored to the left of the posts. Jones’ well-struck penalty gave Old Wimbledonians a 13-7 half-time lead.

The second half was dire, with OWs putting constant pressure on themselves by conceding a succession of penalties.

The visitors camped on the hone line and forced their way over for a converted try to take the lead.

It wasn’t until four minutes from time that OWs got their game together again and, after some sharp passing on the left and a strong run by Tom Wheeler, the ever-alert Lucas went over for the match-winning try.

The Old Boys visit Kingston this Saturday (2.15pm).
