Brown: Welsh keep fans on their toes

London Welsh second row Adam Brown reckons the side’s eye for the dramatic is only designed to keep fans on their toes, writes Damian Dolan.

The Exiles were involved in yet another heart-stopper at the weekend but emerged 25-24 winners in their top-of-the-table clash with Bedford at Old Deer Park, with Jamie Lennard coming within a drop goal of snatching victory for the Blues.

That came two weeks after Gordon Ross’ penalty, with the last kick of the game, beat London Scottish in the ‘Battle of the Exiles’, while Alex Davies’s trio of late penalties snatched a share of the spoils against the Cornish Pirates.

“We’re just creating a bit of excitement for the fans, but we got the win against Bedford in the end and that was the main thing,” said former Newport Gwent Dragon Brown.

“We started the game really well, but Bedford are a dangerous side, they’ve scored the most tries and the most points in the league so far this season.”

Welsh went into the game with the best defensive record in the Championship, but the three tries they conceded to the Blues saw them pass that mantle over to Rotherham.

“We were disappointed with where we conceded two of the tries from, it was a little bit too easy,” said Brown.

“We’ll look at the video and where we went wrong, but they were attacking hard at the end and the boys defended really well to hold out.”

Ultimately, it was Welsh’s refusal to offer up a cheap penalty with Bedford camped on their 22, that forced Blues replacement fly half Lennard to attempt a last ditch drop goal, only to pull it to the left of the posts.

“We had to be as clean as possible because we couldn’t afford to give a penalty away right in front of the sticks, so we just went through the phases and defended really well,” added Brown.

“When their fly half did finally the ball I thought the boys closed him down well.”

Welsh travel to Nottingham tonight.
