Charlie Hayter wants the London Scottish faithful to be the 16th man and roar them to Championship safety tomorrow.

Head coach Simon Amor’s men go into their final relegation play-off game five points ahead of bottom-club Esher and know a bonus point defeat - without a bonus point of their own - would send them back to National One after just one season in the second tier of English rugby.

The RFU confirmed yesterday Scottish would go down if the two teams ended level on points after Scottish enquired whether their superior amount of wins in the normal season would give them the advantage.

But Hayter, on loan from Worcester Warriors, hopes they do not have to worry about that and wants what is expected to be a bumper Athletic Ground crowd to push them toward their goal.

“There is no denying it is a big game and we are more excited than anything else,” said the 23-year-old.

“When you get to this stage of the season it is great to have a game like this to see what we can do in a pressure situation.

“There is more pressure on them as they have got to go out and get the points, we just have to play the way we have been playing.

“I have heard it is going to be a bit of a bumper crowd and it is always nice to have home advantage.

“The support has always been good and will be vital on Saturday.

“It is a cliche, but they can be our 16th man.”

Scottish missed the chance to put the relegation battle to bed last Saturday, when they surrendered a 17-5 lead with 30 minutes to go to lose 26-20 to Moseley.

Hayter scored two tries, his first for Scottish, to put them in command but, in the end, they needed Dan Mugford’s last minute penalty to secure a losing bonus point that could turn out to be vital.

“It was a bit frustrating and one of those things you look back on and think there are little things you could have changed,” added Hayter.

“Thankfully, Dan held his nerve to get us that bonus point.

“I couldn’t watch, but they generally go over when I don’t look.”
