Wandsworth’s basketball coach Nikki Strachan knows they will be the team everyone wants to beat at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games finals.

The boys’ and girls’ teams are defending champions and last week ensured they would take their place at finals day at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on June 30 by going undefeated in the qualifying tournament.

The boys will play Kingston, with Croydon and Kensington & Chelsea in the other semi-final, while the girls face Bexley, with Croydon and Kingston making up the last four.

And Strachan believes the others will be gunning for them.

“I think if you’ve won it the previous year, then you are favourites,” he said.

“We are there again, everyone knows about us, we know we’re the team to beat and, if any team beats us, they’re probably going to win it.

“In this Olympic year, we wanted to be at Crystal Palace and I always try to instill into players that if you don’t come with a good attitude then there is no guarantee, no-one is going to give it to you.”

The qualifiers took place in Waltham Forest, with the girls beating Camden, Croydon and Westminster, all by the same 25-13 scoreline, Tower Hamlets 25-2, Redbridge 25-5 and Kensington & Chelsea 25-9.

The boys beat Enfield 25-23, Brent 25-9, Harrow 25-9, Westminster 25-13 and Haringey 25-17.
