Leon Williams's camp are waiting to hear if the British Boxing Board of Control will grant their appeal into the Streatham fighter's loss of his British Cruiserweight title last Friday.

The 28-year-old was well on the way to success against Shane McPhilbin before his opponent landed a blow to the back of his head in the last round, disorientated Williams and leaving referee Marcus McDonnell with no option but to stop Williams with less than two minutes left on the clock.

Blows to the back of the head are illegal but it wasn't spotted by McDonnell and McPhilbin, the Midlands Area champion, left York Hall with the belt.

Williams's management from TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town have asked the BBBofC to look into it with a view to reversing the result.

While Williams would not be drawn too much on the appeal - he was shocked to have lost his title.

"I totally dominated the fight and didn't get hit until the last round, I couldn't believe it," he said.

"As I went down to avoid the punches he was throwing in the last round I got hit on the back of the head and I didn't recover from that.

"But it was an illegal blow, whether he did it intentionally or not.

"Most fighters would have run around the ring in the last round but I was confident he could not hurt me so I came forward.

"I was confident and aggressive, not complacent.

"I had won the fight by far and taken quite a few of his shots but they had no effect on me.

"I made him my girlfriend in the ring and he was dominated, I had fun with him."

It the BBBofC do not hear the appeal, Williams future would be unclear with McPhilbin understood to be setting up a first defence of the belt against Tony Conquest in late March.

And Williams believes neither fighter would be willing to take him on.

"McPhilbin wouldn't want to fight me again, he said he had never been hit so hard and he has fought at heavyweight," added Williams.

"No disrespect to him, but he will get beaten - whoever fights him next.

"Tony Conquest is a fantastic boxer, I respect him but he would not want to fight me either.

"But there is no need to change weight, I am strong at this weight."
