Europe's top dogs fight it out

6:38am Wednesday 30th April 2008

The Blue Square Greyhound Derby takes place at Wimbledon Stadium in May, with 140 dogs from across Europe competing for the £100,000 top prize. The action starts this weekend, with the first rounds on Friday and Saturday night, and heats continue until grand final night on Saturday, May 31.

Mark Donald from Wimbledon Stadium said: "We are really excited about the competition and looking forward to some great racing.

"The hype surrounding the Derby this year has been amazing and there is no clear favourite."

Top tips Advantage Johnny: Great early pace and consistently fast down the back straight with a wide running style. Recently made the Easter cup final in Ireland.

Tyrur Kieran: Comes to the competition in great form after winning the Scottish Derby. Definitely a Dog to follow Romeo Maldini: Has great track craft to avoid any trouble at the first bend and can finish off the other five with blistering late pace.

Melodys Pat: Has been trialling really well around the four bends of Wimbledon and has great early pace to get ahead of the pack Rossacredibility: Trained by the famous Charlie Lister this wide runner also has great early and if drawn in trap 5 or 6 is quick enough to stay at the front.
