Crystal Palace are facing some tough competition for the signature of Everton striker James Vaughan.

The forward spent three months on loan with the Eagles this season, scoring five times in 14 games, and is considered surplus to requirements on Merseyside - where his substitute appearance against Liverpool on Sunday was his first for almost a year.

Manager Dougie Freedman, who denied he had bid for Chelsea midfielder Jack Cork, confirmed the Eagles are after a permanent deal for the striker but with Celtic also thought to be in the running, convincing the 22-year-old to move to south London could be difficult.

"James Vaughan we are trying but we are up against some stiff competition," said Freedman, who hopes to name his assistant today.

"It is difficult but we are trying to get people in.

"One thing I will not do is something that I have seen happen a lot at this club over the years and that is rush into a deal.

"I want to take my time and pick the right people and not rush into anything.

"Jack Cork is a no, he's a great player but not one we are going to get."
