Surrey stars Matt Spriegel and Grant Elliott were the heroes as the Brown Caps posted their first win of 2009 with a 63-run Friends Provident Trophy triumph over Yorkshire at Headingly.

Banstead’s Spreigel, 22, shared in a crucial 67-run sixth wicket partnership with fellow youngster Gary Wilson, before finishing unbeaten on 56 as Surrey posted 184-7 from 47 overs in a rain affected game.

And New Zealand one-day star Elliott, who starred for Weybridge in the Surrey Championship last season, then helped peg back the hosts with a spell of 4-14 off five overs as Surrey bounced back from a narrow defeat to Durham 24 hours ealier - a game which saw Spriegel claim bowling figures of 2-44.

And Surrey cricket manager Chris Adams was quick to heap praise on the pair ahead of this week’s Liverpool Victories County Championship Division Two clash with Middlesex.

“The lads found it tough batting, but the partnership between the two young batsmen Spriegel and Wilson was brilliant and gave us great momentum going into the break,” he said.

“For Grant Elliott to post figures of 4-14 after a difficult game for him personally against Durham was great and he deserved it.”

And Adams was keen to stress his side cannot afford to waste the momentum against their derby rivals this week.

“This is our last four day game for a while so I want to make sure we put in an absolutely fantastic performance,” he added.

“Middlesex are a very strong side who have clearly not had the start to the four-day season they would have wanted and will be looking to prove a point against their local rivals.

“We must be on our game at all times to ensure we come away with the win and end the first phase of our LV Championship campaign on the right foot.”
