Gunning for glory

Three young members of Surbiton Postal Rifle Club were selected to join the Great Britain squad that went to Sweden to take part in the Nordic Championships last week.

Melanie Flowers, 18, finished in eighth place in the junior women’s prone event with a score of 585 ex 600, ending up seven points behind the winner from Sweden.

In the team event, Flowers and her two team-mates finished runners-up to Sweden, who scored 1765 to GB’s 1760.

In the junior women’s team 3x20 competition, the GB team of Flowers, Sheree Cox and Helen Warnes finished in fifth place with a total of 1637 points.

Meanwhile, in the junior men’s air pistol event, Surbiton's Alistair Exworthy finished in 14th place with a score of 529 ex 600, 40 points behind the winner from Sweden.

In the junior team competition, the three-man GB team of Exworthy, Kristian Callaghan and Paul Lillis finished fifth out of the five countries taking part.

Micheal Bamsey was the third Surbiton member to take part, shooting an air rifle, but he failed to make the winners’ list.

Kingston's shooting team has once again made the final of the London Inter-Borough Competition, finishing top after the three stage shoots.

The five teams that will shoot the final at Ham on September 6 are Kingston, Wandsworth, Hillingdon, Barnet and Croydon Richmond, Sutton and Harrow did not qualify.
