Brentford sporting director Mark Warburton said the capture of former Villarreal full-back Javier Rodriguez Venta is a major coup for the club.

After completing a medical on Thursday morning, the 37-year-old – subject to international clearance – has signed a one-year contract with the option of a second year dependent on games played.

The veteran Spaniard, who plays at right back, joined Villarreal in 1999 and played almost 200 games in the La Liga.

Warburton said: “This is a signing that brings a wealth of experience and ability to the squad.

“Javi has been first choice right back at Villarreal and has played at the highest level.

“He has an outstanding reputation in Spain for his professionalism and approach to the game.”

He added: “Like all our signings, Javi been put through a rigorous testing procedure and we are delighted to see how well he.

“This is a very different signing and is a coup for us and we hope it sends out a message to the fans.”
