Hampton & Richmond Borough midfielder Karl Beckford reckons his Beavers future is in his own hands if he can continue the form that brought a first goal for the club against high-flying Braintree Town.
The 24-year-old switched to the Beveree in December having been released by Ryman League Premier Division play-off chasing Kingstonian after failing to make an impression at Kingsmeadow.
He well struck half-volley earned a 1-1 draw with the Iron, which came days before the 4-0 thumping at Staines Town on Saturday that leaves boss Alan Devonshire’s men precariously placed above the Blue Square South drop zone.
Former AFC Wimbledon man Beckford has failed to settle anywhere since leaving Charlton Athletic - where he appeared in an FA Youth Cup semi-final against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
And he admits enjoying a long spell with Hampton is entirely up to him.
“I just want to be playing football. Football is all I want to do. I want to settle down at a club and play, not be here there and everywhere,” he said.
“If you are not doing the business you get dumped, but I will be working very hard to prove my worth here. I am very confident in my ability and I am very happy to be here.
“I have played at this level before and this is where I want to be playing my football.
“I have not signed a contract, but hopefully I can earn myself a long-term deal and that is all down to me.”
Beckford, who featured in Saturday’s humiliation at the Swans, has traded a promotion bid with Ks for a relegation scrap with the Beavers and turned down a couple of offers to switch to the Beveree.
And he says a change in fortunes is all that is needed to get his new club - currently four points above the relegation zone - heading in the right direction.
“When I got the call from Alan I had a couple of options on the table, but I liked what he had to say so it was a pretty easy decision,” he added.
“Hampton are not doing so well at the moment, but I think they just need a change of luck.”
Hampton’s next three games: Jan 9 Bath City (h), 12 Havant & Waterlooville (h), 16 Woking (a).
