Relief all round in Sutton as England beat Slovenia

Relief was plain to see across Sutton yesterday as England sneaked into the last 16 of the World Cup.

Despite the 3pm kick-off pubs and bars in Sutton High Street were packed full of fans anticipating an England after two terrible performances.

And Fabio Capello’s men duly delivered with a 1-0 victory over Slovenia after Jermain Defoe’s 22 minute strike.

The result prompted celebrations across the borough, where many businesses and schools had made special arrangements for people to watch the match.

Darren Funnell, from Beddington, watching the match in The Cock and Bull, said: “We were so bad in the first 20 minutes I almost went back to work.

“It was pretty nervy at the end but we held on and now bring on the Germans.”

Jo Higgs, another punter in The Cock and Bull, said: “I was ready to give up being English but they’ve done us proud and now we can relax and enjoy the rest of the World Cup.”

Mr Funnell must have been thirsty - we didn't know we were playing the Germans until after 9pm!

Maybe he knew something in advance about the Germany result that the rest of us didn't.

I'm surprised he could still speak to your reporter, having spent all day in the pub...

Personally being a UK citizen for 15 years now but born in the USA, I love the USA and go back often to visit family but I'd never fly a USA flag in Britian as I respect Britian as being the place of my great granparents origins and a wonderful country back when it was truly British (and not part of the EU which now makes the rules). I think the English and Union Jack flags should be flown over every public building and in every town square to honour those that fought for us before and presently to show this is still the UK. I hope they do well at footie, but it's not just footie we should support with our flags. I wouldn't cover my privately owned house in them, granted, but they should be around public places to show solidarity.
