On paper it looks like a tough assignment for Sutton United to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup, but boss Paul Doswell does not see it that way.

United travel to National League outfit Aldershot on Saturday knowing victory would see them pick up a cheque for £12,500.

Moreover, it could set up a mouth-watering tie with a Football League side at Gander Green Lane – first seen under Doswell in 2008 when they beat Aylesbury to set up the visit of Notts County – much to Doswell’s delight.

They went on to lose 1-0 at home to the Magpies, but reached the same stage the following season losing 2-0 at Hereford United.

In 2011 they lost to Notts County again and in 2013 Kidderminster Harriers were too strong in the first round.

But between United and another shot at the dream lay Aldershot, who go into the tie sitting 12th in the table, having won four of their past eight games.

Despite the tough task, Doswell is far from disappointed – as he was after tough away draws at National South rivals Bishop’s Stortford and Hemel Hempstead, who United beat after a replay, much to his delight again.

Doswell said: “I am really pleased with it. It’s a chance to go to a Conference club and we want to match up with them and see where we’re at.

“I like the fact there will be a good crowd and a good pitch – it’s what we want to be a part of.”

He added: “They’re having a decent season, so it will be a good test.

“But we don’t go there with any fear – we go there expecting to get some kind of result, be it a draw to get them back home, or to win.”
