Sutton United boss Paul Doswell has not ruled out Glen Southam one day returning to Gander Green Lane.

The former skipper left United last week in the aftermath of the bank holiday Monday to Whitehawk amid rumours of a falling out between him and Doswell.

However, Southam told the Sutton Guardian earlier this week that no such falling out occurred and today Doswell repeated the claim.

He said: “Funnily enough, I am meeting with Glen today (Friday) to give him some advice on his business interests.

“There was no falling out. His business is getting busier and busier, and once he has that resolved I would not dismiss any chance of his coming back.”

He added: “Jamie [Collins] has taken the armband, and he is a great leader in the dressing room and on the pitch.”

Doswell has welcomed back Bedsente Gomis to the United foldfor the rest of the season, and also taken former fitness trainer Jamie Lawrence’s advice and recruited former Arsenal and Colchester United midfielder Craig Eastmond on a rolling basis.

He has also been boosted by the return to action of Kevin Amankwaah, as well as Louis John’s arrival back from a loan spell at Met Police.

Additionally, while Simon Downer will not be available for this the visit of Gosport Borough this weekend, he could be back for the trip to Weston-super-Mare on September 19.

Doswell said: “For the first time this season we’ve actually got numbers, and can start to pick the side we actually want to play.

“We’ve not had a bad start to the season when you consider the teams we’ve played.

“The only game where we have been outplayed was at Whitehawk, and I recognise that.

“But we totally dominated Truro and should have beaten Concord Rangers, if you turn those two draws into wins, we’d be fifth in the table.”

Gosport Borough are third in the National League South table, and Doswell is expecting a tough task.

He said: “They will be very similar to Concord, they are not easy on the eye sometimes but they will absorb pressure and then hit you on the break.

“They have been together as a team for three or four years, so they have a good team spirit.”
