Steve McKimm knows Sutton United’s future in the FA Cup rests on being ready for anything – because he has been there before, and suffered.

The 38-year-old coach at Gander Green Lane has featured in the first round proper for three clubs and experienced the rough end of the cup stick over the years.

McKimm played in United's 2-0 first round proper defeat at Hereford in 2009, and was in the dug-out when United lost 2-0 at home to Notts County in the second round in 2011.

He also suffered last-gasp heart-break while on duty with Hayes and Gravesend & Northfleet (now Ebbsfleet United).

Now, as United prepare for the long trip to Kidderminster Harriers, he is hoping that their 13-match unbeaten run, and a side full of experience, will nudge fortune in his direction.

“When I was playing for Hayes in 1999, we reached the second round and lost to Hull City after a replay and extra time. They then drew Chelsea in the next round,” McKimm said.

Tough day: Sutton United lost 2-0 to Notts County in 2011

“At Gravesend & Northfleet in 2003, we were knocked out 2-1 by Notts County in the second round when they hit the winner in the 94th minute.

“I know that anything can happen on the day. If we had a goal like the Stoke keeper scored against Southampton last weekend, and then held out for 90 minutes, we’d take it.”

He added: “There is always one team that goes on a dream run in the cup, gets that plum tie, we’re just hoping it is us.”

After almost 15 years in the competition, McKimm has put his finger on why the competition holds such magic – irrespective of the stage or clubs involved.

“Everyone loves the cup because of the anticipation of who you could be playing in the next round,” he said.

“And if you get that game against a team higher than you, as we have done, then it gives you a chance to pit yourselves against teams you want to be facing week in, week out.

“It gives you a taste of playing at a higher level, in front of 3,000 fans, on great pitches. It makes you want it more.”

He added: “We have the experience in the side – with Simon [Downer], Anthony [Riviere] and Craig [Dundas] all playing in the cup for us.

“Then there is Jamie Slabber and Damian Scannell who have top flight experience.

“It will be a tough game, but we’re high on confidence and will be giving it a real go.”
