3:13pm Monday 31st October 2011 in Tooting & Mitcham By Graham Moody
Andre McCollin is the man to fire Tooting & Mitcham up the Ryman Premier League table, according to manager Mark Beard.
The striker scored the winner on Saturday as the Terrors shocked high-flying Lowestoft Town 2-1 at Imperial Fields – their first league success on their home ground since March.
McCollin has spent most of the season on the sidelines or coming off the bench as he recovered from a double leg break but, now that he has returned to fitness, Beard reckons he could be just the man they’ve been needing up top.
“Andre is coming back from a double broken leg but he has got his fitness now and the goal on Saturday was his reward,” said Beard.
“He was brilliant and worked his socks off and deserved that goal.
“It has been on his mind a little bit that he hasn’t scored but he has only been coming off the bench in most games.
“Hopefully, he can go and score more goals now.
“It was good to get the home win as it has been a long time coming.
“We won in the League Cup the week before against Croydon Athletic at home but to get it in the league against a team who are high in the table is fantastic.
“I have been saying for a while that we are getting close, the players are working hard in training and we know they are close to getting to how we want them to play and it came together on Saturday.
“We need to get that consistency now though.”
Wade Small gave the Terrors, who play Billericay Town on Tuesday night, the lead on Saturday, when he converted Michael Noone’s cross.
Lowestoft equalised midway through the second half before McCollin headed home a free kick with five minutes left.
They go to Hastings United in the third round of the League Cup on Saturday.
