Phil Williams reckons his budding partnership with fellow striker Rob Haworth could be the key to Tooting & Mitcham enjoying a successful campaign in the Ryman Premier this year.
The two frontmen are just a couple of the wealth of new signings made by boss Mark Beard as he looks to rebuild at Imperial Fields.
And the former Godalming Town star is excited about the prospect of teaming up with the veteran forward.
Williams said: “It is very early days but I feel really good about the partnership.
“Obviously we have never played together before but we have had a couple of friendlies now and the signs are promising.
“It is going to take time but I think there is something there.
“Rob is good to work with - he is a nice guy and he always giving you advice on the field.
“Mark wants me to play off Rob and get on to his flicks using my pace and I am more than happy to play that role.”
Haworth was on target as the Terrors were downed 3-1 by Brentford’s youth team on Saturday.
But, despite the setback, Williams feels things are coming along nicely.
He added: “I think there is plenty to be optimistic about.
“Against Brentford we had a mad five minutes where everything went wrong defensively but aside from that we looked good.
“There are a few kinks that we need to sort but that is what these games are for.”
Tooting’s budget cuts have been well publicised this summer, but Williams, who operated under similar constraints at Godalming, insists that should not hold them back.
He added: “At Godalming we had one of the lowest budgets in the league but we still made the play-offs.
“We overachieved and I see no reason why we cannot do the same at Tooting.
“It will not be easy but from what I have seen so far I feel we should be aiming for a play-off spot.”
