Sutton overcame what might have been a tricky hurdle to reach the last eight of the Surrey Senior Cup at the Spectrum Leisure Centre on Wednesday.
Having gone out to Combined Counties League opposition in three of the last four seasons, however, United made no mistake on this occasion.
After two goals in a four minute spell midway through the first half had put them in command there were few moments when Guildford looked likely to extend that run to four in five years.
As was to be expected Guildford started quickly, and Kevin Scriven was called in to action twice in the opening stages.
But, in the 19th minute, Jerson Dos Santos, along with Stuart Young the only members of the reserve team to be included in a side that was otherwise full of first team regulars, collected a pass on the left of the penalty area, cut in and drove in a shot that seemed to surprise goalkeeper Anthony Hall and beat him at his near post.
Four minutes later Dos Santos was brought down by Simon Cooper, and Sam Gargan converted the penalty to give United a firm grip on the game.
It should have been even firmer, with Dos Santos put clear by Gargan's flick five minutes before half time but his attempted chip over the advancing Hall ended up as a tame effort straight in to the keeper's hands.
Dos Santos and Danny Phillips also picked up bookings for rash challenges and were joined in referee Craig Hicks' notebook by Alan Bray early in a second half that rarely rose above the mundane as Sutton defended their lead comfortably.
Young had the ball in the net ten minutes after half time from a low right wing cross but the effort was ruled out for some pushing at the near post.
Otherwise, the game drifted towards its inevitable conclusion, sub Charlie Taylor becoming the fourth Sutton player booked for playing on after an offside decision, and three home players took the overall tally to seven, slightly more than an essentially low-key game merited.
Guildford enjoyed a good five minute spell in which they tried to get back in to the game, and Scriven made an excellent low save to keep out a header from Anthony Bridgeman, a former Sutton reserve, before Jamie King failed to make the most of what looked an unmarked header from the resulting corner.
Sutton almost ended the game with a third goal, though, as Steve Watts curled a free kick narrowly wide of the left hand post with Hall motionless on his line.
