After the disappointment of the opening day it was refreshing to be able to watch two fantastic away performances from Sutton United, claiming four points from the two title favourites this season.

The Forest Green game on Tuesday night was a sign of things to come, with a superb battling performance earning a great point which was celebrated by the 72-strong travelling support.

That night was excellent all round, but not a shade on what was to follow on Saturday.

It is easy for smaller clubs to be over-awed playing in front of more than 3,000 people at a large stadium, but Paul Doswell’s men never looked out of their comfort zone and when Dan Wishart excellently curled a free kick into the top corner after 23 minutes, I don’t think too many neutrals would have said it was against the run of play.

There’s no doubt Bradley Wood’s red card for Lincoln helped, but playing against 10 men is not easy, especially if you allow yourselves to get complacent.

Credit to the management team this never happened and aside from a brief 10-minute spell after Lincoln’s freak equaliser, United looked the better side.

It is worth noting all three substitutions made by Paul Doswell were excellent decisions, particularly the move to bring on Ryan Burge to regain control of the game.

New loan signing Joe Morrell also helped with this and had a great competitive debut overall.

It was hard to see exactly what happened for Jamie Collins’ late goal from the away end, but it was great moment and exactly what we signed up for when we got promoted.

With 43 games still to play I’m sure there’ll be plenty more great moments to come.
