Hampton & Richmond Borough loan star Reece Jones may want a return to AFC Wimbledon, but that will not stop him from helping save the Beavers from the Blue Square South drop.

The 19-year-old struck a last gasp winner in Saturday’s thrilling 4-3 triumph over Truro City at the Beveree, and hit a spectacular opener in Tuesday’s 2-2 home draw with high-flying Dover Athletic.

Jones is on-loan from the League Two Dons and has struck up a formidable midfield partnership with Josh Huggins in just a handful of appearances.

Boss Mark Harper is hoping the pair can inspire his side to safety, but the young playmaker has admitted he is ready to earn his chance at Kingsmeadow.

“The is the fittest I’ve ever been and I’m beginning to show that I can do 90 minutes easily. I’m enjoying it here,” said Jones.

“Wimbledon have been honest. They are in a relegation battle and want the people there who know what they are doing in that situation.

“For me to get games at a decent level works for all of us. Hopefully once they are safe I’ll get back there and get some games towards the end of the season.

“I was out injured for a couple of months, but now I think I’m coming to my peak and hopefully I can push on and see what I can do.

“I’m only 19 and for a midfielder that is young. So I’m looking to build for the future. Now I know I can take my chance if it comes.

“The standard here is not too different to AFC. The lads are really good.”

Jones’s strike from distance and a Dean Inman header gave the Beavers a shock 2-0 lead on Tuesday, but Ian Simpemba and Billy Bricknell’s late effort denied them what would have been a fine victory.

“The goal was right up there as one of my best,” said Jones, pictured left.

“It is devastating to be 2-0 up, going well and then draw like that.

“I’ve only been here a couple of weeks and that seems to be the story of the season – conceding sloppy goals at set pieces and switching off.

“Two months ago we would have taken a point in a game against a team like Dover.

“It just shows how well the team has progressed, that we are disappointed not to win.

“I think we’ll get out of trouble. Every game I’ve played in we have got better and better and hopefully that can continue.”
