Neil Warnock heaped praise on defender Paddy McCarthy last night after the Irishman helped Crystal Palace beat his former club Charlton Athletic.
The centre-back, who was this week called back into the Republic of Ireland, put in a dominant display against the side he left in the summer as the Eagles ran out worthy 1-0 winners.
Warnock said: “Because Paddy’s an Irishman and he’s likely to flip his lid at the slightest thing, I asked him to try and be professional tonight and use controlled aggression and not get a red card.
“I wanted a performance and I thought he gave a captain’s performance. He lifted us and dominated and didn’t want to lose, he epitomised everything that was right.
“I’m glad he’s been called up to the Republic as when I signed him I said I thought he would get back in the team. It’s a plus for him.”
Sean Scannell was also selected for the full Republic side which will play in a challenge match against Nottingham Forest on October 9.
“I wanted a performance and I thought he gave a captain’s performance. He lifted us and dominated and didn’t want to lose, he epitomised everything that was right."

The match will give players the chance to impress and be selected for the Republic squad for their World Cup qualifier against Cyprus six days later.
